On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century

On the August 4 episode of World Views @CIS, Suzette Grillot and Mitchell Smith discuss bringing bestselling author and historian Timothy Snyder to campus and share observations on Snyder’s work, as well as their implications for the United States. Then, Suzette speaks with Snyder about his 2017 book On Tyranny and some of his recent insights on the state of democracy.

Timothy Snyder is the author of On Tyranny and The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America. Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University, where he teaches courses on modern East European political history. He is also a fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna and serves as a member of the Committee on Conscience at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Snyder visited the University of Oklahoma in April for a President’s Associates Dinner and was the Daniel Holland Memorial Lecture series’ inaugural speaker.
