Educating for Peace: Myo Win and the Fight for Human Rights in Myanmar
On our December 8 episode of World Views @CIS, host Suzette Grillot speaks to Myo Win, a human rights activist from Myanmar and winner of the OU Center for Social Justice’s 2018 Clyde Snow Social Justice Award.
Myo joins World Views to discuss the history of Myanmar, ethnic tensions and conflict in the country, and his foundation’s involvement in the production of a new film addressing the military government’s use of violence against women as a weapon of war.
Myo Win is the founder and Executive Director of the Smile Education and Development Foundation, an NGO he created in his home country of Myanmar to promote education, interfaith cooperation, human rights, and community training. Founded in 2007, the SEDF has a membership of almost 1,500 young people from different regions and ethnic backgrounds in Myanmar. Myo’s foundation has also established a number of Community Learning Centers throughout the country, and the organization has supported the production of documentaries exploring the lives of those affected by conflict in Myanmar. Myo has also served as a Team Leader for the Interfaith Council of Myanmar, and was a recipient of the British Government’s Chevening Fellowship to study conflict resolution at the University of York.
