Dr. Mirelsie Velazquez is an educational historian whose research focuses on race, ethnicity, gender, and Latino history. She currently works as an assistant professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Oklahoma’s Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education. Dr. Velazquez also serves on OU’s Women’s and Gender Studies Advisory Board, the Latinx Program Advisory Board, and the McNair Scholars Program as an Advisory Board member and mentor. She received her PhD in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and joins World Views to discuss Puerto Rico’s political and social status following 2017’s Hurricane Maria.
