NATO and the Future of US Engagement in Europe

On this week's show, World Views dives into this week’s NATO summit with a roundtable discussion about the organization’s development and purpose, followed by an interview with Steve Hill, Legal Adviser and Director of the Office of Legal Affairs at NATO.

In the first roundtable discussion on World Views @ CIS, Rebecca Cruise and Suzette Grillot discuss the formation and history of NATO, one of the oldest standing international alliances. They'll talk about NATO’s shifting role in international politics, and what the Trump administration’s attitude toward membership could mean for the future of US relations with Europe.

Steven Hill is a senior lawyer at NATO. He currently serves as NATO’s Legal Adviser and Director of the Office of Legal Affairs, where he advises the Secretary General and International Staff on NATO operations and legal issues. After obtaining his juris doctorate from Yale Law School, Hill spent time at the Office of the Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in China, and worked as the Counselor for Legal Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. Hill was also a chief U.S. negotiator for the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities. He joins us on World Views to discuss his work for NATO and his international experience in the field.
