Human Rights Work Through Journalism and Sustainable Development
On today’s show, we’ll talk to two guests about their work in human rights through two different industries – journalism, and sustainable development.
Abdülhamit Bilici is the former editor in chief of Turkey’s largest newspaper, Zaman. Zaman was founded in 1986, and the paper’s popularity and circulation grew to an estimated 650,000 readers by 2016. However, in March of that year, the paper was seized by police and turned over to the control of the state. Its staff was threatened and forced out, and many fled the country to protect their families. Bilici joins us to discuss press freedom in Turkey, his history with Zaman, and what he’s been doing to promote awareness and freedom of the press since fleeing from his home country.
Chris Macoloo is the Regional Director for Africa at World Neighbors, an international development organization based in Oklahoma City. Before joining World Neighbors in 2003, he worked in Kenya as a program officer and deputy country director for the SNV/Netherlands Development Organization; as well as serving as a program officer for Intermediate Technology Development group. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University in Urban Geography and Planning, and has over 10 years of experience in research and teaching at the University of Nairobi. Macoloo’s research has centered on housing and development, and he joins us today to discuss his work on agriculture, health, and natural resources at World Neighbors.
